Top Resume Mistakes to Avoid
Common pitfalls that hurt your chances — and simple fixes to make your resume stand out.
Even experienced professionals make resume mistakes that cost them interviews. Here are the most common ones — and how to fix them.
1. One resume for every job
This is the biggest mistake. Every job is different, and your resume should reflect that. Tailor it for each role by emphasizing the most relevant experience and skills.
2. Too long
Unless you have 15+ years of experience, keep it to one page. Two pages maximum for senior roles. Every line should earn its place.
3. Listing duties instead of achievements
"Managed a team of 5 engineers" tells the recruiter what you did. "Led a team of 5 engineers to deliver a product 2 weeks ahead of schedule, reducing costs by 15%" tells them what you achieved. Always quantify where possible.
4. Poor formatting
Keep it clean and scannable. Use consistent fonts, clear section headers, and enough white space. Avoid graphics, tables, or multi-column layouts that confuse applicant tracking systems (ATS).
5. Typos and grammar errors
Nothing kills credibility faster. Proofread, then proofread again. Better yet, have someone else review it.
The fix? Use CVPanel to generate a tailored, well-structured resume for each application. Focus your energy on networking and interview prep instead of formatting.
